BCLC, Super Bowl LVII Betting C$2.5M Project

The British Columbia Lottery Company is looking forward to a massive online betting activity as the Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events of the year. The Crown Agency expects this year's Super Bowl LVII, which competed last night, to attract sports betting of about C$2.5 million to the iGaming platform PlayNow, where the final is regulated.

Since the legalization of single event betting by the Canadian federal government in August 2021, the Super Bowl has turned into a much bigger betting opportunity for betters. Prior to that, Canadians couldn't only bet on games and instead had to use Faray betting combinations or place forecasts on unregulated websites.

Sunday's clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles gave the Chiefs a tight win. BCLC expects about C$2.5 million in bets on PlayNow, the state's only sports betting regulatory platform, over the weekend. Last year's Super Bowl edition hit about C$2.5 million.

Crown Corporation spokesman Matt Lee commented that this year's edition of the NFL Finals would bring much bigger bets than last year's tally for PlayNow. He explained that last year's trading volume was record, but this year's edition is likely to be much bigger because the sports betting industry has grown over the past 12 months.

According to BCLC data, BCLC sports fans bet nearly $2.5 million on the Super Bowl last year. And Lee's rough estimate for the 2022 Grand Final is that there were tens of thousands of bets in total on PlayNow. He also explained that most of the prize money is not as big as a few thousand dollars in the game.

BCLC issued a statement on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, reminding local betters not to bet for money but to play for fun. Dan Beeb, chief operating officer of the crown organization, noted that the Super Bowl is a marquee sports betting event for many locals and the crown wants them to have the best experience.

For this year's Super Bowl, BCLC launched a new marketing campaign this week, designed specifically for sports bets. It reminded locals of the value of encouraging them to take a break from gambling and now allowing pressure to influence their betting decisions. Earlier in the new year, BCLC strengthened its anti-money laundering protocol through collaboration with Everly Holdings. Through the agreement, offline and online casino content providers will implement Avery compliance anti-money laundering solutions in Crown Agency's land-based and digital activities.
