World Cup may restrict Macau's GGR growth

Nomura warned that the 2014 Brazil World Cup could "limit the surprise of potential gross game revenue (GGR)" in Macau for months in June and July.

The Japanese brokerage firm said in a note published on Wednesday that it sees a "limited upside catalyst" for the city's gaming industry over the next two months.

The World Cup begins on June 12 with the last set on July 13.

In June 2010, Macau's casino GGR fell 20% month-on-month, as several financial analysts kept some gamblers away from game tables and slot machines because of the 2010 World Cup. Revenue fell from 17.1 billion MOPs in May to 13.6 billion MOPs ($1.7 billion) in June 2010. It rose to 16.3 billion MOPs in July.

Nomura analysts Lewis Cheng and Harry Curtis, however, wrote that "we remain optimistic about Macau's long-term fundamentals, especially large investments, given the low penetration rate of mainland visitors, the rise in China, improved infrastructure connectivity with Macau and the supply of additional hotels when new properties in Kotai open."
